The Kansas City Chiefs kept busy at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana, attempting to learn more about the prospects in the upcoming draft class. 

We know that they’ve already held formal interviews with a defensive lineman from Mizzou and a pair of tight ends, but what of the position that fans most desire? A to Z Sports can confirm that the Chiefs met with a trio of receivers in some capacity. They surely met with more players at the position, but these are the players we’ve been able to confirm thus far. 

Wide receiver was a problem for the Chiefs during the 2023 NFL season and Brett Veach knows it. They’re taking an interest in what is considered a deep class, and so far they’re researching players who fit a certain mold. 

Troy Franklin could play with his favorite NFL quarterback

Asked who his favorite quarterback in the NFL was, Oregon WR Troy Franklin echoed the sentiments of Chiefs Kingdom. 

“Right now? Patrick Mahomes,” Franklin said, with little hesitation. 

Well, there’s a chance that Franklin could end up playing with Mahomes. He’s among those to have met with Kansas City at the combine, and he’s often been mocked to the Chiefs at pick No. 32. The team appears to be targeting speed to pair with second-year WR Rashee Rice. They notably had struggles separating during the 2023 NFL season.

 “I’m a longer speed guy, so if I get the start right I can run in the 4.3s,” Franklin told reporters. “But I’m definitely gonna run in the 4.4s.”

Franklin is out to prove that he’s more than just a speed guy, though. That’s where the interview process comes into play. He thinks he can play, inside, outside and on special teams, but he also is willing to do the dirty work.

“If you don’t block , you’re not gonna get the ball,” Franklin said. “Getting in there, getting your nose dirty, all that good stuff is good. They like to see that. It helps your running backs score longer touchdowns. Your teammates love to see that stuff from skinny receivers.”

That’s the type of selfless mentality that the Chiefs love. It’s something that will certainly ingratiate Franklin to the team’s decision-makers.

Xavier Worthy aims to beat NFL 40-yard dash record

Texas WR Xavier Worthy told reporters on Friday that he had a formal interview with K.C.’s brass. 

It should come as little surprise that the Chiefs are interested in Worthy. He was asked to play a ton of different roles within the UT offense and can make an impact at every level of the field. He can succeed with designed touches, attacking the middle of the field, or even on the deep go-routes where K.C. lacked success in 2023.

He’s looking to potentially break the combine record in the 40-yard dash this weekend.

Worthy also told reporters that he idolized former Eagles WR DeSean Jackson. 

That’s plenty apparent in his game. 

It’s also quite notable given Andy Reid drafted Jackson in Philly. Scouting from a greenhorn named Brett Veach, now Chiefs general manager, played a massive role in Jackson winding up with the Eagles, too. 

McConkey told reporters that he had met with all 32 NFL teams in some capacity already. The Chiefs’ first conversations with McConkey occurred in Mobile, Alabama at the Senior Bowl, but I’m told he caught up with Kansas City during informal meetings at the combine. 

McConkey believes that he has already opened quite a few eyes with his performance at the Senior Bowl. Specifically, teams now know that he’s not just your average slot wide receiver. He’ll look to reinforce that notion in Indy.

“I really think that like when it comes to like competing, I’m going to outcompete you, I’m going to outwork you,” McConkey told reporters. “I think I can run routes, I can play on the outside, inside, special teams. I think I’m very versatile and can do a little bit everything. Obviously the guys in this draft class are ridiculous. We have some more great receivers. But when it comes to doing a little bit of everything, I think I stand up there with all of them.”

Typically, the Chiefs don’t exhaust a lot of time at the combine for players they’ve already met with. They’ll prioritize formal meetings for the players they’ve not done as much work on. It’s not uncommon for follow-up interviews from the Senior Bowl or Shrine Bowl to be informal in variety. 

Could McConkey be in play for Kansas City at the bottom of the first round? I’m told they’d rather find themselves in a situation that they encountered with former Georgia WR Mecole Hardman or even SMU WR Rashee Rice last year. That’s to say, they’d like to trade up slightly on Day 2 and secure a talented pass-catcher like McConkey in the middle of the second round.
